Which iPhone, iPad and Mac devices will not support the Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence is generating a lot of buzz, but it's important to know which devices won't be getting these exciting new features. This post clarifies which iPhones, iPads, and Macs are currently excluded from Apple Intelligence support.

Apple Intelligence: Not for Everyone (Yet)

Apple Intelligence, with its on-device processing and AI-driven capabilities, has specific hardware requirements. This means older devices, even if they're running the latest software, won't be able to access these features.

The "No-Go" List: Devices Without Apple Intelligence Here's a breakdown of the iPhones, iPads, and Macs that, as of the latest information available, do not support Apple Intelligence:

iPhones:

All iPhones older than the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. This includes:

  • iPhone 14 series (iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max)
  • iPhone 13 series (iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max)
  • iPhone 12 series (iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max)
  • iPhone 11 series (iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max)
  •
  • iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and older models.
  •
  • iPhone SE (all generations)

iPads:

All iPads older than those with the M1 chip. This includes:

  • iPad Pro (all models prior to M1)
  • iPad Air (all models prior to M1)
  • iPad (all generations)
  • iPad mini (all models prior to the A17 Pro)

Macs:

Currently, Apple Intelligence features are focused on iPhone and iPad. While Macs may gain some AI capabilities in the future, no specific Mac models currently support the features being discussed. It's important to note that this could change.

Why These Devices Are Excluded

Apple Intelligence relies heavily on the Neural Engine within the A17 Pro (for iPhones) and M1 (for iPads) chips. These chips are designed for the complex machine learning tasks required for features like writing assistance, smart replies, and image generation. Older devices simply lack the processing power to handle these demands efficiently.

What If My Device Isn't Supported?

If your device is on the "no-go" list, you won't be able to use the Apple Intelligence features. However, your device will still receive standard iOS, iPadOS, or macOS updates and you'll continue to have access to existing functionalities.

The Future of Apple Intelligence

Apple is constantly developing its AI technologies. While your current device might not support Apple Intelligence, it's possible that future iterations of the technology could expand compatibility to a wider range of devices. Stay tuned for updates from Apple.
